Being an adult is cancelled.

October 10, 2018

I'm turning 30 next year and I'm doing okay for my age. I have my own business, I own my own house, I'm pretty healthy and I even manage to get 8 hours of sleep every night.

It may sound like I'm bragging but let me get to the point. I've discovered something over the last 12 years of "being an adult" and here it is...

Everyone is just winging it, all the time.

It may look like I have my s*%t together but don't be fooled. Buying a house was literally the most stressful time of my life and I spent a lot of time on dictionary.com trying to decipher the emails sent through from my solicitor. Having my own business sounds impressive but I don't claim to have that figured out either.

I think I'm more of a"say yes and figure it out later" type person rather than someone who actually knows what I'm doing. I look back on the last three years of business and it's just a blur of fortuitous decisions that have somehow got me through.

Do you remember being a kid when people who were 30 were old? If you were over 25 then you were definitely married with a couple of kids, a money tree and a wealth of knowledge. Who knew that our parents were just making it up as they went along and without the internet for guidance!

I mean, how did they do it??

Fast forward to my google search history in the years to come.... "how to keep child alive."

Saving money, raising kids, eating well, exercising, keeping your house clean, trying to find the lids for 53 different tupperware containers. Who knew adulting meant being so damn responsible? I didn't get that memo when I was 8 years old dreaming of the days I could wear make up and buy my own clothes.

Watching the catastrophe of politics unfold on the news is another clear sign that no one knows what they're doing. Even those in charge of nations are winging it from one decision to the next (except Jacinda Ardern, she most certainly has it figured out).

So if you're feeling like life is just a series of red pill or blue pill moments then you're not alone. We are all trying to stay afloat in one way or another.

If I figure out adulthood in the next fortnight, I'll put together a handbook and send it out in my next blog but until then, take solace in the fact that we're all just making it up as we go along.

Here's to the next 50-60 years of figuring it out,
